Detecting a water leak can save you £000’s on your businesses annual water bills once it is fixed. Our tips on how to detect a water leak are easy to follow meaning you can get an indication of the extent of your water leak.
Signs you have a Water Leak
Keep an eye on your water bill – The most significant sign that you have a water leak within your business is if there is a sudden increase in the water usage and cost on your water bill. In some cases this increase can be due to seasonality so compare your period’s bill against the same period of previous years.
Check your toilets – A common place for a leak is within your toilets, to check to see if your business has a leak in the toilets remove the top of each cistern tank and listen closely for any hissing.
If there’s no noticeable sound add a drop of food colouring into the tank if after a few minutes it is in the bowl then you have a slight water leak.
Check for Wet Spots, Mould & Mildew – A water leak obviously causes wet spots which eventually turns into mould which in turn creates a musty odour. If you begin to see mould or at any sign of wet spots you need to get an expert in to see if you have a water leak.
Find your footing on Damp / Boggy Ground – if you start to feel the ground on your businesses property getting boggy and damp even when there hasn’t been any rain you could have an external water leak. These leaks are usually larger than some of the others mentioned as they involved the main pipelines into the business.
Subsidence – a major sign of a major and ongoing water leak is a rise in subsidence around your business. Subsidence creates a number of issues within your business like sticking doors and windows, cracks in walls, rippling wall paper and cracks appearing after long spells of dry weather. These can all be put down to subsidence due to damage to drains and water pipes around the property.
