What are surface water drainage charges?
Well, surface water is the water industries name for rainwater that falls on the roofs, roads and paths of your commercial property. The Water Companies charge for the collection, conveyance, treatment and disposal of surface water that discharges to the water companies sewers or indeed via a water company’s waste water pipe to a water course. The charge is due and payable if the surface water enters the public sewer via water company waste water pipes or indeed if the surface water is discharged via the water company waste pipes and then onward to a water course.
The charging structure and the actual amount your business is charged varies greatly from water company to water company, for example: –
Scottish Water / Business Stream: – They charge for surface water drainage based on a rateable value of the property for property drainage and roads drainage. The annual charges for a commercial property can be substantial and in many cases more than the metered water charges.
Northumbrian Water: – They charge for surface water drainage based on a site area so the larger the site area the higher the charges.
United Utilities: – They charge for surface water drainage based on site area, similar in fact to Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent Water and South Staffordshire Water.
All of the other water companies such as Thames Water, Welsh Water, South East Water the surface water drainage charges are actually built into the metered waste water volumetric charges, therefore the higher your water use the more waste water your business is likely to discharge the more you pay.
The surface water drainage charges levied by water companies are sometimes incorrectly charged, the water companies will always charge business customers full surface water drainage charges unless they receive a proper formulated claim detailing why the charges should either be reduced or cancelled going forwards, in which case a refund of the overcharges would be paid by the water company.
